“Thank you again for believing that every child should have the opportunity to become a good reader. Your program has been a blessing in our life and one that we never take for granted. I know it is because of this opportunity my daughter can read–is there any greater gift?”

Ryan's Crystal Apple Award Nomination Letter:
'Yes we can.' These words were used by my teacher long before President Obama used this for his presidential campaign slogan. I first met Mr. Erv Carpenter in 2007 and that's when he said, 'it's not if, or maybe, I CAN yeach you." Strangely that was the first time I had heard those words. Like Americans during the 2008 presidential election, I finally heard a message of hope.
My educational support began early, as I had been in special education throughout all of my school years, but was seemingly ending in failure because by the time I reached high school I was at my best between a third and fourth grade reading level. I simply couldn't do the school work, but was in trouble most of the time for 'refusing' to do it. I was getting in so much trouble all the time, that through a series of events I left public school to be evaluated. This experience was not only the worst thing that happened to me, but the best thing as well. It was the worst because I felt hopeless (I was told I would never go to college), but it was the best because that is when I met Mr. Carpenter.
My name is Ryan ---------, and I have dyslexia. My teacher is Erv Carpenter and he teaches dyslexics (both young and old) to read at the Wisconsin Institute for Learning Disabilities and Dyslexia (WILDD). Mr. Carpenter changed, if not saved, my life. He uses a multi-sensory phonics based method of teaching which increased my reading level three grade levels in 6 months, and within 18 months I was at grade-level for the first time in my life.
Mr. Carpenter has dedicated his professional and now retirement years to helping others with dyslexia, because he knows first-hand of this learning disability since he has dyslexia. It is because Mr. Carpenter did not get diagnosed until late in his life (after dropping out of high school and returning from Viet Nam) that he is now helping both students and veterans alike.
I believe he should be honored with the Crystal Apple Award for his dedication to helping dyslexics and others struggling with reading. He has a real message of hope and just maybe the media surrounding this award will bring others to Mr. Carpenter. Even if it is just one person, it will be one person who will be forever changed and have the doors of opportunity opened. This is a change you can believe in; I am not only planning to attend college after high school, but I believe I CAN.
